WoW Mage Guide

Out of all the classes I’ve played, the Mage is easily one of my favorites. Between being able to freeze enemies in their tracks and crowd control via sheeping, the mage is a fun and exciting class that has one of the highest DPS ratings in the game.

A lot of players who choose to roll mages don’t realize how difficult leveling can be. Although the end result is a character with versatility beyond almost any other class, the journey to 85 can frustrating.

Mages have a strong disadvantage compared to other cloth armor classes when it comes to survivability. They have less HP and lack any form of healing abilities. The success of a Mage in battle is entirely dependent on their ability to avoid taking hits.

This means that Mages have to play very carefully when engaging in instances where AoE fights are forced. Their ability to freeze or sheep mobs for crowd control and high burst damage are very useful when leveling alone, but these techniques can easily draw unwanted attention away from a tank.

BEST MAGE PROFESSION

Tailoring is easily the best profession for Mages. Unlike many other classes, it is fairly important to keep equipment updated throughout the levels. By choosing the tailoring profession, Mages will be rewarded upgrades that will give them an extra advantage in both PvP and instances.

Many of the armor that can be crafted using tailoring have a significant advantage over even Karazhan sets. To get the most out of your leveling, make sure you keep your profession level consistent with the appropriate level.

There is no mandatory secondary profession, but enchanting can be both very useful for your leveling and a great money maker.

As most players know, any crafting profession can be insanely expensive to level. If you don’t have a pretty solid gold bank, you may want to ignore enchanting and go with something like mining or skinning to make extra gold.

LEVELING A MAGE

While Mages are a blast in battlegrounds at 80+, making it there can be a whole different story. Mages are extremely powerful but they are also extremely fragile in battle.

Known as the taxi service of World of Warcraft, Mages do have a great advantage when it comes to traveling. They are able to create portals between cities on opposite continents and even conjure food and drink.

When it comes to leveling, Mages are very much self-sufficient which can be great for players who don’t like grouping.

Frost Mage

Compared to Fire and Arcane mages, Frost Mages have a lower damage capacity but much higher survivability. They have both a stronger mana pool and the ability to create barriers and freeze enemies more efficiently.

Frost Mages are the easiest way to break into PvP. Even against a much stronger opponent, there’s a multitude of ways that a player can escape or even annoy their pursuers.

Fire Mage

Fire Mages are easily one of the highest damage builds in the game. Focusing on burst damage, Fire Mages can be a great choice for leveling, raiding, or PvP. Depending on your individual playing style, you may consider choosing to supplement your build with a few Arcane abilities for mana efficiency.

Fire Mages require slightly better gear than other alternatives. Their damage output makes this the ideal DPS build in raids and a force to fear in PvP. The key to leveling, however, is a good rotation of spells.

Arcane Mage

Arcane Mages are not very efficient levelers. Functioning as a utility tree, it is usually used to augment Frost and Fire mage specializations rather than standing as its own build. However, there are some players who choose to level Arcane Mages for both the challenge and the unique gameplay aspects it presents.

The main advantage to this build is sustained DPS damage. With excellent gear, many Arcane Mages have been able to surpass even the damage of a Fire Mage.
